I am taking a class called Clutter Free Teaching and one of the assignments
is to de-clutter one area in your classrooms. For that assignment, I chose one area at two of my rooms (Burn’s Art Room and Albin’s Art Room). At Burns I chose a cabinet where I store painting material and for Albin, I chose a desk drawer in my desk.
The cabinet at Burns became an unorganized painting mess by the end of last year. I am determined not to allow this to happen again. I took everything out of the cabinet and then I organized some of the materials into containers and neatly placed those containers and other material in the cabinet. After that I labeled their location in the cabinet.
The reason I chose the desk drawer is because I have four desk and they all have “Junk” drawers. Albin was the easiest to start with. This is my plan; I will clean out and organize a drawer at each desk each week. I began this task by taking everything out and threw out what I thought was trash and replaced the items that belonged in the drawer and others where they belonged.
I felt very good when the projects were completed and doing small areas at a time seems a more effective and realistic way to handle my situation. Time will tell if it will work. I just finished my second full week of teaching.
What area in your art room would your de-clutter?
